Search Engine Submission Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do I have to submit every page of the site?
No. Just the domain / home page like http://www.yourdomain.com/ . If your site is search engine friendly, then the search engine spiders will be able to work out the other pages of your site by analysing links from your home page and the other subsequent pages.
2. How long does it take?
There is no service level agreement between you and the search engines, you are not paying them to index your site, they do it for free and the search engines will visit your site when they are good and ready to do so. This is usually within a couple of weeks. Search engines do not index whole sites all in one go, they will do a little at a time, and then continue with this process the next time they visit.
3. Do I have to submit regularly?
No. Only once. The search engines will then revisit your site on a regular basis.
4. Is there any way I can expedite the process?
Yes. You can sometimes expedite the initial submission process by providing quality links from other established authoritative sites. Such new links can also expedite the re-indexing process, as can regularly updating and adding more content. If search engines see that your site is regularly changing it makes sense that they are more likely to revisit more often.
5. I've heard there are hundreds of search engines. Do I have to submit to other search engines?
No. The three main search engines are Google, Yahoo and Bing. Most other search engines (e.g. ISP search engines like AOL, Freeserve etc) actually use one of these main 3 search engines as their underlying engines. Any other search engine not covered here is probably too obscure and too little used to actually worry about.
6. Do I have to submit an XML sitemap?
No. If your site is search engine friendly, then the search engine spider will be able to work out what other pages make up your site. Tinkering around with XML sitemaps if you don't know exactly what you are doing can be more harmful than good.
7. Can I check how many pages have been indexed?
Yes. By running the site:www.yourdomain.com command in the search engine's search box. You can also look at your web logs to see when search engine spiders have visited your site (although there will be a delay between spidering and becoming available on the search engine).
8. Can I check how recently my pages have been indexed?
Yes. Perform a search which returns your page, or use the site: command (see 7), and click on the "cached" link under the page result. This should display the search engine's cached copy of your page and it will show the date when the page was cached.
