Meta Description Tag

Does Google use the Meta Description tag for ranking purposes? Google says it doesn't, but for the sake of a simple test, it's worth verifying this.

Here is what Google says regarding Meta Description tags...

From Improving snippets with better description meta tags (this article is from September 2007, but it is still referenced in later Google documents including their SEO starter guide pdf from November 2008):

"And it's worth noting that while accurate meta descriptions can improve clickthrough, they won't affect your ranking within search results."

Google guidelines page:

"While accurate meta descriptions can improve clickthrough, they won't impact your ranking within search results."

This page on this site contains certain words in its meta description which are not anywhere else on the page or the site. Once it is indexed we can see if Google picks up the words in the description for ranking purposes.
