Link Building

When link building, now that google can understand some javascript, how are the various A HREF onclick javascript approaches handled by google? This issue is increasingly important to understand since more and more directories, common places for link building, are now employing different onclick javascript URLs to the HREF URL (e.g. hotfrog), so a directory which provides what appears to be a direct inbound link, may not be so useful as one might think.

What happens when a A HREF link tag appears to be doing one thing, i.e. linking directly to your website with your URL in its HREF attribute, but actually for real users does something else via the javascript contained in its onClick attribute?

Google has been able to understand some onClick javascript for quite some time now. What if some of those directories which you thought were providing useful direct one-way inbound links to your site, aren't actually providing much SEO benefit at all because google is paying more attention to the onClick javascript code?

This test attempts to find out more about this issue.

Tests:

1. foolish elbows - this link test uses a javascript function in the onClick where the function is declared on page, google is supposed to be able to understand this. Since this is probably the most complex onClick javascript that google is supposed to handle, it is worth performing this test first, since if it works it means we do not have to worry about the more simple tests. Most directories use this technique anyway, using functions rather than more simple javascript, so we are testing a commonly used real world technique.
